Church of Saint Mary Magdalene

Gençlik Caddesi, Bornova, Izmir, Turkey

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was built about 1858 by Charlton Whittal, a prominent member of Smyrna's Levant Company, as a memorial for his beloved wife. It served the community of Bornova (known at the time as Bournabat), where the leading citizens of the expatriate community lived. For a time the congregation was so large the building had to be extended.

Now the lovely, historic church building lies at the edge of the Ege Üniversitesi land. Increasingly musicians of that community are making use of the church as a performance venue, enjoying the fine acoustics and interesting architecture of this historic building.

We worship at St. Mary's at least once a month, usually at 5 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month. To confirm service times please call the church office.
